PoleAddix owner and instructor Cynthia Wilson talks about her pole dance journey.

How were you first introduced to pole dance?

For my husbands 55th birthday (Dec 11th), he wanted me to take him to a strip club. Ive never been to one and thought "Ok, what, 2 hours tops?" So we went and I got excited to go watch too!

Needless to say, none of the ladies were doing tricks or holds just wiggling around. Being I come from an active athlete I turned to hubby and said, "I want a pole for Christmas." He said, "What? Are you sure?" And I've been "poleing" ever since!

What about it intrigued you and kept you coming back for more?

I didn't have any mirrors at first and was killing myself, until hubby bought me a 6ft x 8ft mirror. Then when I could see what I was doing, it made me want to do more!

How did you train? Did you use any DVDs or attend classes? Or are you self-taught?

I taught myself from YouTube videos, met wonderful ladies and men and still keep in contact with most of them!

Are you an instructor?

I am a owner and certified instructor at two locations.

What has been the most challenging thing to learn in pole?

As I get older(I'll be 58 this Aug) its the keeping up with the new moves!

What is your favorite move/trick?

The Butterfly.

Do you have a "pole idol" that you want to be like?

I want to be like Felix Cane!

What advice would you give to someone who has no dance background and wants to try pole?

I have those ladies once in a while! I have a Pole~Tease Class, like an intro. I tell the ladies that aren't sure they want to spend a lot and not feel its for them, so I offer that, they fall in love and take more classes!

Have you ever competed? Do you want to?

No, I wont do that, but I have held Pole Jams and contests before at my studio and other venues.

What are your thoughts about 'stripping' and 'exotic dance' being associated with pole dance? Does it bother you?

Thin line, I guess its up to the individual so to speak.. I teach from a fitness side, but if girls want to bring their heels after the Beginner Series that's cool with me!

Have you used any online resources to help you learn anything in pole?

Mostly YouTube videos and I have a Pocket Pole app on my phone. We are always looking up pole moves and checking out newbies as well as famous polers.

What would you like to see happen in the pole community?

I wish everyone would get along. I've been poling for almost 9 years, teaching for 6 years this July (2014) and have been certified since last June. There's too much, I feel, "I'm better than you attitudes."

Do you have a favorite grip product?

I love Mighty Grip.. and I love Joel Bretan..(I think that's how you spell it).

How often do you train?

I work 6 days a week, sometimes 4 classes in one day, besides the parties.

What product have you looked for in pole but have not been able to find? (If any).

I usually find what I need, if not, clients help.

Cynthia, thank you so much for sharing your pole dance story with us!
